Summary

I am a PhD student in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies(DIAS)and Trinity College Dublin under the joint supervision of Prof. Peter Gallagher & Dr. Joan Campanya as part of the solar physics research group. My research is focused on observing the effects of geomagnetic storms on the surface of the Earth using the Magnetometer Network of Ireland(MagIE).

Geomagnetic storms are generated by the interaction between the Solar wind and the Earth's Magnetosphere. These events allow charged particles to precipitate into the Earth's upper atmosphere. Here, the particles generate the currents responsible for the Aurorae. However, these currents can damage ground-based infrastructure such as power-grids and pipelines, as well as disrupting gps. I investigate geomagnetic storms in order to improve our understanding to help protect our ground-based infrastructure.
